Overview

The Silk Road was a network of ancient caravan routes stretching from China to Europe, connecting the entire Eurasian continent. Central Asia played a key role as an intermediary between China and the rest of the world, with major cities like Bukhara, Samarkand, and Termez located at the crossroads of these trade routes. For over 2,000 years, caravans led by thousands of nomads on camels traveled across the continent. The Silk Road still exists today — although often spoken of in the past tense, the paths have simply been replaced by highways, and camels by freight trucks.
